What occurs is that successive exposure to loud noises damages the miniscule hair cells in the inner ear, and once damaged can’t be replaced.

These hairs, called stereocilia vibrate replying to sound waves. These hair cells create electrical impulses that travel along the auditory nerve to the brain. Once these signals hit the brain, they are perceived as sound. Any change in these hair cells can upset the balance in the system, leading to tinnitus. There are 2 basic forms of the condition. Objective tinnitus refers to a sound even the doctor can hear. This may be the sound of blood circulating carried by the carotid artery, which runs near to the ear.
