Facts About Hawaii Islands

The 50th state in the United States is made up of a string of islands collectively known as Hawaii, but the largest of the islands is also known as Hawaii. This often causes some confusion. For a better differentiation, many simply call Hawaii island the big island. The Hawaii islands are actually the result of underground lava formation beginning in the floor of the sea and building upwards until the magma extended above the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

There are eight islands inhabited in the string of the Hawaii islands with some others tipping their peaks out of the water, but due to size and resources are not inhabited. Nihau, the north west-most island of the string is the smallest of the settled island and the big island is situated to the furthest southeast link in the chain of the Hawaii islands. Oahu is home to the state capital Honolulu as well as you’ll find there almost any things to do in Hawaii for holiday makers, chosen by former ruler King Kamehamea due to the closeness of the natural harbor, nowadays well-known as Honolulu Harbor.

Molokai, Kauai, Lanai and Kahoulawe are the other lands in the Hawaii islands and not to forget traveling to Maui. Transportation between these islands is provided by boat or air with the larger islands having airports taking large commercial aircraft and others smaller, commuter aircraft.

With the Hawaii islands beginnings traced back to barren lava growth, it is speculated that the nature helped bring life to volcanic land by wind currents, in the water and by flying birds. When the first human habitant came for Polynesia in about 500 A.D., plants and animals had already seized the island and recent conservation methods have assured the went on growing and stable home ground for the native species.

The islands of Hawaii got an important strategy for the Air Force and U.S. Navy, even before in 1941 Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. It’s still home to U.S. military bases, that provide a large population with opportunities for civilian jobs, it also features the memorials for the soldiers who perished during the attack.

The population of Hawaii islands has grown enormously, particularly since becoming a state in 1959, as the nosecount in 1910 recorded a population of about 154,000. Denizens have raised to over 1.2 million in 2000. Hawaii vacation tours are an overwhelming getaway to the only U.S. state entirely surrounded by the sea and is located about 1,500 miles away from mainland at the west coast of California.
