An Insight into Shooting Stock Photography

Introduction

Welcome to An Insight into Stock Photography. This article is based on a talk given at Focus on Imaging 2007. I hope you find it interesting. Just remember these are my views only, they are not gospel and have been put together based solely on my experience of shooting and selling stock photography, primarily through Alamy and photographic magazines.

We’ve seen a lot of change in the markets and the economy in general. This has affected the stock photography market. But don’t lose hope, magazines and newspapers have an insatiable appetite for images.

One Approach

Having many options – and finding opportunities to build a business in photography. And stock photography is just part of that – a chance for someone else to sell your pictures for you and to for you to get paid, while off doing something else. It’s like having commission only sales people working for you. The thing is you have to give them something saleable but you can’t give them a kick up the backside if you’re not selling much!!

Some professional photographers don’t do it, some do, some make a living from it. The choices and balance is up to you, as a commercial photographer I do some of it.

It may seem like an uphill challenge but it’s not and it’s within most people’s grasp. Provided you understand the customer. This applies to both the Picture Library and the Ultimate Buyers.

Take a look around you. Pictures are everywhere – the printed media in its widest context has a massive appetite for images on a daily basis.

Humans generally don’t like reading online – well not for very long – they like tactile magazines to flick though and dip into and if they didn’t, the newspaper industry would be long dead by now – wouldn’t it !!

Every magazine, exhibition, web site, company brochure and newspaper all need images on a regular basis – and if they don’t have it or can’t send a photographer to go out and shoot it – then they’ll buy it.

Printed media works on deadlines that go right down to the wire, so immediacy is important and the shots can’t be the same old ones used month in month out.

The picture buyer generally will work to longer lead times and less tight deadlines – but not always – the images they buy can be more general or iconic – like these motivation posters you see in some offices .

Take for instance a sports shot of runners on a track – you might see it in the sports pages of a newspaper for a day, then maybe in a Athletics magazine that month – but it can soon become a poster with a motivational statement “Defeat” or “Winner” that has a whole new market.

So where are you – the photographer – in the food chain so to speak. Take a look below.

• The Photographer
• The Stock Library
• The Picture Buyer

You’re on the top of the list with the picture library between you and the buyer, but at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to getting paid. But whilst you need to meet the technical requirements of the library and other submission requirements, it’s the picture buyer you must be thinking of long before you even contemplate picking up the camera.

The stock library will do the sales and marketing of your images, for a fee which varies from library to library, but they must have images that buyers want.

Before you sign up, read through the agreement and see if the set up suits your requirements.

Diverse Sectors

Each of these publications, Gossip magazines, The Times Newspaper, Corporate Publications, serve a specific market – but each buy photos from Alamy to mention just one library – they also buy from many others too – in order to make the publication that day, week or month.

So what sort of pictures do these publications buy? Well it’s very varied. Just browse through and look at the side of the shot, it’s likely to have an image source next to it.

• Take a Break – items / products, staged poses – youth etc.
• Daily mail – travel
• Environment – utilities, waste, pollution etc, – front cover.

Get Rich Quick – NO!

Some say it’s a numbers game – true to some extent, but the way I look at it is this, if you’ve got 10,000 images of shots that won’t sell – you’ve got nothing .

For me as a professional photographer that provides photography services, it’s the long term view – looking to develop and maintain a set of saleable images.

Remember pictures are perishable – i.e. – they become stale – and this will vary dependent upon the industry sector or subject they apply to.

Transport, fashion, IT, business, communications all need, in my view, re-shooting each year. For example a man in a suit by a computer the size of a house in the 1950′s isn’t the modern industry image of today.

Wildlife, sky scenes, landscapes, travel pictures – less so – but look at any developing city – take London – since the Wheel and the Gherkin went up all the skylines are out of date , also look at Dubai – changing all the time.

Easy money – no it’s not – but you can build up an underlying income if you think about saleable pictures and keep them relevant – remember they have to illustrate a story – so need to tell a story in their own right.

What is Stock

So let’s take a look at how you get in and who there is to choose from. Each Library has its own benefits and key target markets, so find one that suits you and what you are good at shooting.

• Getty
• Alamy
• Comstock
• Jupiter
• Superstock
• Fotolibra
• Istockphoto,
• Pixtal
• Jumpimages
• Adams
• Nevstock

Most will have web sites and these will stipulate how to join of make submissions.

$ Sites

For me I don’t like them and here’s why. I’m going to set you a assignment and at the end of it I will buy the photograph from you. So you go and shoot a subject you like, do your research, do the shoot, post produce the image and upload it to my site and hey presto – I pay you 50p at today’s exchange rate — any takers ? I rest my case!

Submission Rules

All image libraries will set technical requirements and these will vary depending on how much server space they want to invest in.

Alamy work to 48mb TIFF minimum – 1, to keep the bar high enough that only the serious photographer applies and 2, to give their customers’ choice and immediate access to high quality images. Now they’ve changed this from the above to accept JPEG images – so your file size is down to around 8 meg.

Others work on thumbnail sizes then let the buyer contact you. Personally, I think, trying to judge a shot off a 100 or 200k image is not doing the shot justice.

Others specify minimum standards of camera / model, or make you go though an approval or recommendation process. The thing with this is to find a library that matches your needs and capabilities. Also the amount time you have available to dedicate to stock photography.

Licenses

Non-Exclusive License

The buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the picture , but another image buyer can also purchase and use the image under the same licence.

The image buyer must specify, each time: intended use, media, territory and duration.

Pricing is based on intended use, media, duration and territory. The territorial pricing will be matched to the specific country.

Exclusive License

The picture buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image.

The picture buyer obtains exclusive use of an image under the terms of the licence: these terms may affect the use, media, territory and/or duration in which the image can by used by other buyers.

Rights protection can be an advantage for high-profile projects such as ad campaigns and promotions.

Royalty Free (RF)

The picture buyer pays a one-off fee – they do not have to pay royalties to contributors on a use-by-use basis.

The image buyer will not know who else is using the image.

The image buyer should check that the image has the appropriate releases before using the image where a release is required, for example Model release for people and property release for prominent buildings or logos.

Commission

  • 50/50
  • 60/40 but with global distribution
  • 70/30
  • 80/20 – Photographers Direct

Again find a library that works for you and also find out when you’ll get paid and any minimum balances you must have to get paid. Sometimes you can wait 3 months for your money.

Work Flow

As a provider of photography services I shoot RAW and make minor adjustments to pictures . Now I’m using Adobe Lightroom in place of Raw Shooter and it’s speeded up my work flow considerably. Photoshop – I use this far less now but only to colour and touch out any dirt or what might look like dirt – by this I mean the occasional bird in the sky can look like sensor dirt if it’s a way off in the distance. Resize your image. Output the file to the required format.

Then depending on the library upload over the Internet or cut a CD / DVD.

An Example

Take an older camera the Nikon D70 – 6.1 mega pixel camera. Raw files were around 4 or 5 MB and a TIFF was at 17MB with the JPEG at 4MB.

To meet the submission guidelines you need to Interpolate the image – make it bigger. In Photoshop this was Image > Image Size>Percent. Increase by 168% to give a 48 – 50 MB sized image. Then Save as Jpeg – 5 – 7MB.

I now shoot on a Nikon D300. RAW files are now 18 – 19 mb, opened in CS3 at 34 mb – requiring interpolation by only 20%.

What I’ve Sold

Wonderful sunsets, superb travel pictures, glamour images, or maybe my Dad’s cat! These are just a few examples of shots that have sold.
My dad’s cat, police cars, road signs, street scenes in New York, studio models and traffic jams.

Finding More Value

There are plenty of publications that will promote your sold work, FPME (Now out of print March 2009) is just one of them and if you have sold a shot just let the editor know – chances are it can earn you some more money.

Not only that, look out for sites like Photographer Direct that offer an Image Request service – all you need to do is send 1 email. Also look to the corporate clients – they too may take an image if it fits with their style – be brave, make that approach, but do your research first.

Top Tips

  • Find a stock library that suits you
  • Don’t be put off by submission specifications
  • Know your end image buyer
  • Start shooting what you are comfortable with – then move on
  • Check out what pictures already exist
  • Read the Picture Needs
  • Remember pictures images are perishable
  •

Check out how many pictures of your subject matter already exist in a library, then ask yourself – can these be improved, shot differently or updated.

Read the images needs issued by Stock libraries, they tell you what sells and what is needed, don’t ignore them.

Thank you for reading this article, I hope you found it interesting, should you have any questions, please feel free to make contact through the web site.

    A Comprehensive Background in Balloons

    Introduction

When you think of the word ‘Balloons’ what ideas appear in your mind? Is it simple balloons you blow up for children’s parties, or balloons that fly off on their own, or the special balloons for key events like the ones produced for the wedding of Charles and Diana? There are now so many different types of balloons on the market that you can get almost anything for everything any event you like.

So what exactly is a balloon? One definition defines a balloon as a flexible bag which you fill with air or some other type of gas, such as helium or hydrogen. The early balloons would have been made with non elastic material but modern balloons are made with latex so they have great elasticity and can be pumped up to much larger sizes.

    History of Balloons

The earliest known balloons were made in Central and Southern America by the Aztec Indians. They were made out of the bowels of cats which were carefully cleaned then turned inside out. They were sewn with special vegetable thread that had the property of sticking to itself when dried in the sun and creating an almost airtight seal. The balloons were then made into air filled model animals and burned at the top of the Aztec pyramid as an offering to the sun god. (The first example of balloon modelling). A Portuguese priest, Bartolomeu de Gusmao, held the first public exhibition of a balloon in the Portuguese Court in Lisbon in 1709 which was probably made from an animal bladder that stretched when filled with air. The rubber balloon was invented in 1824 by a Michael Faraday and was filled with hydrogen to be used in his experiments with hydrogen. But the familiar latex balloon did not appear until 1847.

The early rubber balloons were sold in America in Parks and Circuses for a penny each. Although the latex balloon was manufactured in London in the mid 1800′s the mass production of them did not happen until much later in 1931.

As technology has become more advanced so has the world of balloons. Now balloons can be made from rubber, latex, polychloroprene or nylon. They can be filled with air, helium, hydrogen or water. Filling the balloon with air can be done with the mouth, a manual pump(such as a hand pump), or electric inflator or with compressed gas. The balloons are used for many differing purposes, and decorated in numerous ways to fit the occasion.

Some balloons are purely for decoration, others are ideal for specialist purposes because of their low density and relatively low cost. The balloon’s properties have led to them being used in a wide range of other applications in the areas of meteorology, military defense, medical treatment, and transportation.

    Types of Balloons

    Party Balloons

The most common and familiar types of balloons are the party balloons. Small packets of party balloons usually are bought to blown up for children’s parties and other kinds of celebratory events to create a festive scene which can make all the difference to the event.

These days I often see a cluster of balloons at the entrance to a house or hall to indicate where the party is being held. The balloons come in many different sizes and colours and can have printing on the face which expands as the balloon is inflated. Party Balloons are mostly made of natural latex tapped from rubber trees. The rubber’s elasticity makes the dimensions variable. Balloons filled with air usually hold their size and shape much longer.

    Helium Balloons

Balloons which float upwards are filled with the gas helium which is lighter than air. So for an event where balloons are let off into the atmosphere, they will need to be helium balloons. Helium filled rubber balloons typically only retain their buoyancy for a few days. The enclosed helium atoms are smaller than the pores in the latex through which they escape. To increase the float time of a helium balloon for a week or more, the inside of the balloons can be coated with a special polymer solution to reduce the leakage of the helium.

    Water Balloons

The water balloons are often smaller than regular balloons and made from thin rubber so that they can be easily broken. They are filled with water and are intended for children to throw at each other as a game or practical joke with the aim of getting each other wet. They may also be used in competitions or games.

    Foil Balloons

In the late 1970s along came the foil balloon. These are made of thin non-stretch metalized plastic film or mylar. They are much more expensive and made an appearance at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana causing quite a stir. These balloons have attractive shiny reflective surfaces and can be printed with color pictures, logos and patterns to customize them. The most important attribute of metalized nylon for balloons is its ability to keep the helium gas from escaping for several weeks because it is less permeable. Foil balloons then have the advantage of being light weight, longer-lasting, with increased buoyancy. They are perfect for parties, in-store decorations, special celebrations and for gifts.

    Animal-Shaped Balloons

Metalized nylon balloons can be cut into the three dimensional shapes of animals and then printed to represent the chosen animal. Once inflated the balloons make very bright, decorative items for gifts or may be used as a theme for a special event. Screen printing is used to create the designs for these spectacular pieces.

Balloon Modelling and Balloons in Art

Balloon modelling is a popular entertainment for children and adults alike. A Balloon artist twists and ties inflated tubular balloons into shapes resembling animals or even people. Sometimes they are called balloon sculptures, not to be confused with those cited below. When I have watched these artists at work I have often wondered why the balloons don’t burst when they are working.

This is because the Latex balloons used are made of extra flexible rubber so they’re twistable and can be tied without popping when being used for balloon sculptures. These sculpting balloons are very difficult to inflate to begin with so quite often the sculptor uses a pump.

    Balloon Sculptures

Professional party decorators may use hundreds of helium balloons to create balloon sculptures. These sculptures are often limited because of the round shape of the balloons to simple arches or walls but on occasion more ambitious “sculptures” have been attempted. Sometimes balloons are used as table decorations for special events which will have 3 or 5 balloons to each bouquet. The decoration will usually include curled ribbon with an added weight to stop the balloons from floating away.

Professional balloon party decorators use electronic equipment to enable the exact amount of helium to fill the balloon. For non-floating balloons air inflators are used. Professional quality balloons differ from most retail packet balloons as they are bigger in size and made from 100% biodegradable latex.

    Balloon Drops

I am sure you will have been to a party or dance where at the end of the evening hundreds of balloons fall from the ceiling to mingle amongst the participants. This is known as a balloon drop and is often performed at New Year’s Eve celebrations or at political rallies and conventions. It is a relatively low cost way of making a festive atmosphere at the party climax, so everyone goes away feeling they have had a really good time.

If you want to create a balloon drop for your own event you will need to set up a large plastic bag or net overhead, which is suspended at a certain height. This is then filled with air-inflated balloons so that they will fall onto the target area below when the balloons are released. You will also need to develop a mechanism for releasing the balloons. Balloon drops may also be performed at many celebrations, including graduations and weddings.

    Balloon Rockets

As a child I am sure you played the game of blowing up a balloon then letting it go while watching it speed around the room making a rude noise with everyone falling about laughing. These are called balloon rockets and I remember being intrigued and wondering how they worked. When the mouth of the balloon is released, the greater pressure of air inside forces its way out and the elasticity of the balloon contracts causing the balloon to be propelled forward. This is fundamentally how a rocket works. The balloon can also be filled with gases other than air, with similar results. Besides being simple toys, balloon rockets are a widely used teaching device to demonstrate physical principles and the functioning of a rocket. The balloon rocket is frequently used to demonstrate Newton’s third law in physics.

    Balloon Publicity

To raise awareness at a major publicity event your company logo or message is printed onto the balloons at releases or balloon races. Companies specialising in UK balloon delivery can be contacted for large quantities of racing balloons.

    Balloon Releases

In Australia they had a fund raising event on 18th April for Make-A-Wish Day. The 5,000 released balloons make a dramatic sight as they rise across the bay marking the number of wishes granted since 1985.

If you are planning a balloon release or race of more than 5,000 balloons, it is a requirement that you apply in writing for permission to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) at least 28 days in advance. The CAA also like to be informed of balloon releases up to 5,000. A form can be obtained by calling either the NABAS office on 01989 762 204 or the Airspace Utilisation Section of the CAA on 020 7453 6599

Because of concerns about the effect on the environment of large numbers of balloons being released, the NABAS – The Balloon Association have produced a code of conduct which can be found on their website at www.nabas.co.uk

    Safety and Environmental Concerns

Balloons are made of natural rubber latex (NRL) which is a natural product coming from rubber trees that are grown in certain areas of the tropics. These are not trees that are cut down to produce the NRL. The NRL is obtained by tapping from mature trees and is a sustainable crop providing employment for many agricultural workers in some of the poorest areas of the world.

As a consequence of NRL cultivation and the consumption of latex products, the planting and maintenance of rubber tree plantations helps towards the prevention of tropical rainforest deforestation. This contributes significantly to the removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, produced by industrialised nations and a major source of global warming.

Research shows that latex balloons which are completely natural coming from the Hevea tree degrade faster than oak leaves. Oxidation occurs first in the breakdown of latex and it begins within 60 minutes of a balloon being inflated. As the decaying process is by natural exposure nutrients are released into the ground. Most balloons used in releases today are made of bio-degradable latex.

An estimated 90/95% of balloons released rise to an altitude of 5 miles, at which height the cold will cause the balloon to become brittle and shatter into miniscule pieces. The small fragments then floating back to earth to degrade in the ground. Balloon fragments are unlikely to cause harm if accidentally ingested. This is because latex and the dyes used in latex colouring are non-toxic.

Printed latex balloons are a fantastic, low-cost and environmentally friendly way of advertising at promotions and events. All latex balloons supplied by B-Loony, the UK’s largest printed balloon manufacturer, are completely biodegradable. The code of conduct produced by NABAS for balloon releases gives advice to ensure the protection of our environment.

    Manufacture of Balloons

Balloons are manufactured by their millions every day in many countries. The rubber is collected as liquid from a rubber tree and then sent to the factories where the liquid goes through a series of treatment processes. These processes include shaping and colouring operations and testing for quality. The outcomes are thousands balloons which provide a splash of colour and party atmosphere at celebrations and conferences or any event where a large number of people gather.

    Conclusion

Toy balloons have been a source of pleasure and excitement throughout the world for many years. They have provided hours of entertainment and interest for children as well as being an educational resource. Non toy Balloons are being used for science, medicine and travel and are invaluable in helping us to learn about our world. Balloons I am sure will remain very alive and active on the world’s scene for many years to come.

Magic Dice Tricks for the Successful Magician

When people think of magicians, they often imagine them doing magic card tricks. But there are several other genres of magic tricks that the successful magician performs. One of those types of magic includes performing dice tricks.

Dice tricks are fun and easy. And even if you have never performed a magic trick before, you can learn to do these…

Keep in mind this simple premise that the numbers on the dice are predictable – opposite sides on the dice add up to seven. You can get a lot of mileage out of these little cubes! Try these magic tricks out:

    The Bartender’s Psychic Dice Trick:

You will need three dice, a tumbler full of water and a volunteer for this trick. Get the volunteer to drop the dice into the tumbler and ask them to hold up the tumbler and add up the numbers on the bottom of the dice.

Now ask him to place the tumbler back down on the table. Reach in and grab the dice and rub them on your forehead. Make sure to pick up the dice in such a way, that it is obvious that you did not see the bottoms.

Now reveal the total of the dice to the volunteer. Your audience will be amazed that you are correct.

Of course, you will know the number because you saw the dice’s upward faces. You have added them up in your head and subtracted that number from 21 – the answer you get is the total of the bottom faces of the dice.

Remembering that the opposite faces of a dice always add up to seven, you have three dice, so three times seven is 21. If the bottom numbers were two, three and five, their total is ten. The top numbers will be five, four and two – a total of eleven. Eleven plus ten equals 21. A simple, but effect, dice trick!

Another version of this trick is the Dinky Dice trick. Using three dice, get a volunteer to roll them and then stack them one on top of the other, while your back is turned.

While you can’t see, tell them to add up all five faces of the dice, which are hidden (that will be the two faces on the bottom and middle dice, plus the bottom face of the third die). Now we already know that six faces in alignment will add up to 21. When you turn and see the top dice is the number three, you can quickly tell the audience that the volunteer’s added number is eighteen and you’ll be correct!

Here is another trick that your audience will be amazed by, before they work out the simplicity of it, is the Clock Face and Magic Die trick.

You will need one die and a watch or clock. Tell your volunteer to select a number from the clock, but don’t reveal it.

Now tell them to find the opposite number on the clock (for example, three is opposite nine) and subtract the smaller number from the larger one. To this number they must add one and remember the final number.

The magician (that’s you!) rolls the die and say that the number that appears on the die, plus the one on the opposite side will add up to the number they have in their head!

The two faces on the die will always add up to seven (we know that already), and the math formula from the clock face will always add up to seven, too – tricky, but very effective!

There are plenty more dice tricks like these ones – but a successful magician knows how much to reveal to keep the audience interested. Have fun with these tricks and amaze your friends and family!

Top 3 Tips for Using Wireless Cameras as Nanny Cams

In today’s world of excessive crimes involving children, more and more parents are utilizing wireless cameras as nanny cams. These technologically advanced electronic devices can be used to evaluate the actions of both your children and those that care for your children while you are away from the home. Many are so advanced that you can actually pull up the camera on your computer at work and view real time feeds of what is occurring at your home. If you are interested in integrating nanny cams throughout your home, you will benefit from the top 3 tips for using wireless cameras detailed below:

    1. The first step to choosing wireless cameras to observe what is occurring in your home when you are away is to determine if they include the feature of being able to watch live feeds from a remote location. This will allow you to ensure that the children are doing what they are suppose to be doing and will also allow you to make certain that the person in charge of your children is acting appropriately.

    2. The next tip is to ensure that the wireless cameras that you incorporate into your home are those that make recordings. You should avoid those that use VHS tapes. It is best to select cameras that record using DVR technology. This will provide you with a more detailed view and you will not have to worry about the issue of natural video degradation.

    3. Ensure that the wireless cameras that you use are not visible. They can be placed in picture frames, radios, televisions, plants, and more! If the sitter or children know that the camera is in place and recording, they will likely act unnaturally. You will want to capture their natural behavior at all times.

Using wireless cameras as nanny cams is a wonderful safety feature that no home with children should be without. Follow these simple tips to ensure that you get the best recordings possible, as well as the most natural.
